Here is a quick caramel sauce that works well on cakes and ice cream.
Caramel Sauce
1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup evaporated milk
Bring butter, sugar and salt to boil in saucepan, stirring with whisk.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and milk.
