Fried Bread {aka...Scones or Navajo Tacos}

Fried Bread, yeast version
1 Tb. yeast
½ cup warm water
2 Tb. sugar
1 egg
1 cup warm milk
2 Tb. shortening
4 cups flour (approx.)
1 tsp. salt

Dissolve the yeast in the warm water, add sugar. Melt shortening in the milk as you warm it up. Combine all liquids and add the beaten egg. Add 1 cup flour and salt. Gradually add more flour until a soft dough forms. Knead. Let rise. Divide the dough into about 8-10 pieces and roll out into circles on a floured counter. Heat an inch or two of oil in a pan and fry. When one side is done carefully turn it over with tongs and cook the other side. Drain cooked fry bread on a paper towel lined plate. Make it easier note: if you want you can make the dough in a bread maker—just add the ingredients in the order recommended for your model.

Tiffany's note: We love this fry bread made into Navajo Tacos--layer the fried bread with taco ingredients.  They are also fabulous topped with powdered sugar or honey!
